Our week at Cappagh Group with the Brawo Magnavity LED lining system.

S1E had the fantastic opportunity to partner with Cappagh Group of Companies to hand over not one, but two of the innovative Brawo Magnavity LED lining systems, including the required full installation kits that included two inversion drums and air compressors.
There was not a dull moment, during this handover visit. We not only signed, sealed and delivered the equipment to their Iver site, but the team here at S1E also tested, demonstrated and trained the lining division team; and provided support out on the field at their first jobs with the new LED lining system - did we mention, this was all done in one week!

Day 1 – The Handover and Presentation Day

Cappagh Group is continuing to invest right across their business and on Monday we got to unwrap and reveal their latest purchase to support the delivery of their trenchless solutions to Thames Water for the next eight years. We got to hand over two Brawo Magnavity LED lining systems, two inversion drums and two air compressors. Out of their containers and wrapping, we had the perfect set-up for the obligatory handover and handshake press photos.

Next, it was time for the technical seminar and presentation with Albion, our Lining Development Manager at S1E. Albion pulled together Cappagh’s lining division team to provide an overview of the Brawo Magnavity system, including the technical specs, technical data of both the Mega and Nano LED heads as well as an overview of the various Brawo liners and resins, and the benefits of its speedy curing time.

To finish the first day, and to prepare for the demonstration and training the following day, Albion carried out a liner wet out with the lining division team to provide detailed instructions about the Brawoliner and Brawo resin that is to be used with the new LED lining system.

Day 2 – Demonstration and Training

To ensure the lining division team at Cappagh Group feel comfortable and confident with their new Brawo Magnavity system, a complete hands-on demonstration and training were provided by Albion. During the day, Albion was able to cover an introduction and briefing of the control unit; explaining the user-friendly touch-screen technology, that will help with the step-by-step Brawoliner lining process, making it easy for the team to control the machine and deliver a consistent job every time.

During the demonstration and training, preparation procedures and set-up and installation were covered at the start, while later in the day Albion used the Brawo Magnavity LED lining system to demonstrate shots through multiple bends, as well as the correct disassembly and transportation of the full installation kit.

The compact LED curing machine from BRAWO Systems can cure the range of flexible Brawo® liners in pipe diameters of DN70 to DN300. The system saves time and effort as the unique LED heads allow simultaneous retraction with the inversion of the liner; curing is thus carried out immediately after installation; with the smooth finish of the liner it will reduce the likelihood of future blockages for the team.

Day 3 – Above Ground Testing

After Albion’s initial training, the third day was all about the Lining Division Team taking the lead with the led lining system and installation kit to do above-ground testing through multiple shots while having Albion there for support. The Lining Division Team at Cappagh Group could immediately see and appreciate how the system will minimise disruption to customers, with its size and speed of cure. Reducing the site footprint and shortening the overall customer journey means, Cappagh Group are offering great value back to Thames Water.

To ensure they are prepared for any kind of job out on the field, ‘blind shot’ procedures were introduced such as liner preparation for blind shots, and tips and tricks for the perfect result. Liners up to 50 metres long can be installed and can be ‘blind shot’ from a single chamber. This means pipes runs of up to 100 metres can be lined between chambers.

To finish the training, any final questions about the Magnavity system were answered, while the team also discussed and analysed the potential challenges and obstructions on site that the team could face, to review solutions and opportunities.

Day 4 – First Field Day:21m of 100mm Pitch-Fibre Pipe

After three days of training, it was time to do a live job. The day started with wetting out the liner in the yard and placing it in the inversion drum ready to be transported and used out on the field.

Once on-site at their first field job, Cappagh Group’s lining division team were able to set up on-site for inversions and cure of liner – taking 10 minutes to set up, as all the installation kit has been designed to be easily transported and manoeuvre.

21m of 100mm Pitch-Fibre Pipe with areas of deformation exceeding 40% was successfully re-rounded and lined to leave it fully serviceable and flowing free. Unit operation and the cure with the new Brawo Magnavity LED lining system only took two hours to complete. Using this new lining system, the team at Cappgh Group are rehabilitating the assets for future generations – as the BRAWOLINER® and the vynelester based resin has a working life and durability 50 years, offering an economic and environmentally-friendly alternative to open construction work.

Day 5 – Second Field Day:‘Blind shot’ lining

The second job was certainly a more demanding one due to not having access from both ends. On the last day of our week with Cappagh Group lining division team with the Brawo Magnavity, the day started with the preparation of the liner for a blind shot – this meant attaching the end cap with half a metre of calibration hose.

Once the liner was prepared at the yard and arrived on site, the lining team once again worked together and followed every procedure as previously shown. Attaching an end cap to the liner for the blind shot, meant the team could maintain the speed of cure for this job to be completed in just over an hour from the liner arriving on site with Albion on site to support the installation and any system queries.

Summary

S1E Ltd is incredibly honoured to be a part of this journey with Cappagh Group and is certain that the lining division teams grow to be even more successful by increasing their productivity and minimizing the risks that traditional lining methods offered.

Over the five days, the team at Cappagh have shown how simple and easy it has been to learn and use their new piece of equipment. Through the demonstrations, training, and onsite support, they have developed a good understanding of the Brawo Magnavity LED lining system operation abilities and controls to be able to complete two live jobs three days after delivery and handover of equipment.

S1E is looking forward to working together to optimize productivity and working with Cappagh Group to achieve a lot more success going forward.
